Where AI supported marking and feedback practices and used, clear information should be provided to students on their use that:
- Details why, and how, AI tools are being used to support the marking and feedback process.
- Emphasises that there remains human oversight of the marking process, that marking and feedback decisions remain based upon academic judgement, and that all marks and feedback remain the responsibility of the academic members of staff involved in the module or the assessment.
- Addresses any privacy concerns that students might have about their data or work being uploaded to AI tools and any possible future implications arising from this.
- Signposts the agreed University of Birmingham Frameworks and Principles on the use of artificial intelligence tools within teaching, learning, assessment, and support.
An example statement from the Birmingham Award is provided below.
The Birmingham Award team are exploring the use of generative AI to support with the processing of student reflections. Your skills statement submission on MyAttributes may be uploaded into a tool which uses artificial intelligence to analyse whether reflections are meeting our bespoke marking criteria. The use of this tool will allow The Birmingham Award team to process your reflection more quickly, allowing you to use the feedback provided to make enhancements when articulating your experiences within future recruitment processes for example.
Please be reassured that all reflections will continue to be reviewed by a member of staff and the tool exists purely to support with this process. The information that you provide will be used only to facilitate your participation in the award. The AI tool uses an institutional and secure GPT4 large language model (LLM), and no data will be passed to OpenAI or any third parties. Please contact the team if you have any questions.
Although The Birmingham Award is not an academic programme of study, we adhere to the University's Guiding Framework for the Introduction of Generative AI within Teaching, Learning and Assessment.
