The India Institute is a supportive network for academics, research councils, institutions, government offices, commercial partners and all those interested in building transnational education partnerships with India.
The primary objective of the India Institute is to provide an overarching framework for the University’s links with India, and to be the focal point of the Birmingham-India relationship. It aims to increase the visibility, impact and coherence of the University’s engagement in India.
The Institute's activities encompass academic research and scholarship; teaching and postgraduate research; policy analysis and debate; collaboration with corporate partners; and public engagement in culture.

“Our university’s relationship with India is a long one. We were founded in 1900 and welcomed our first students from India in 1909. In over 100 years since then, we have provided education for more than 2,000 Indian students. And we have worked with our Indian partners to tackle some of the challenges that face our two countries, and the rest of the globe, in the 21st century. To mark this long history and to celebrate the thriving partnerships that we have in India, we are proud to have launched the University of Birmingham India Institute.”

Dipankar Chakraborty, India Institute Country Director
Dipankar Chakraborty joined the University of Birmingham India Institute as Country Director in January 2019.
Dipankar is based in New Delhi and leads on our in-country engagement with India. Dipankar looks to maintain relationships with our existing partner institutions to support academic engagement and research collaborations, whilst also identifying new opportunities with organisations in India.
