Research Subject: Specially-adapted exercise intervention for frail geriatric populations
Beneficiary: University of Birmingham
Supervisory Team: Prof. Anna Whittaker, Prof. Janet Lord and Dr. Carolyn Greig
PhD Update: Currently in write up phase, aim to submit in July 2020
Biography:
Paul holds a Bachelor of Science B.Sc. (Hons) in Sports Science and Health from Dublin City University (Ireland), where he graduated in November of 2015 with a first class honours (1.1). Paul's PhD relates to assessing the feasibility and impact of specially adapted exercise interventions, aimed at improving the multi-dimensional (physiological, psychological, cognitive, social and emotional) health and functional capacity of frail geriatric hospital inpatients and nursing home residents.
The three research projects which constitute the majority of Paul's research within the PANINI project are:
1) Keeping Active in Residential Elderly (KARE)
A 12-week mixed methods feasibility study conducted at the Olivet Christadelphian care home, Birmingham, United Kingdom, which assessed the feasibility and impact of a 12-week adapted resistance training intervention; aimed at improving the multidimensional health and functional capacity of frail older adults within residential care settings (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03141879).
2) Seated Physical Activity in Ageing (SPAA)
A mixed methods feasibility study at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in delayed transfer of care patients which assessed the feasibility and impact of specialised exercise interventions aimed at improving the multi-dimensional health and functional capacity of frail geriatric hospital inpatients (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03141866).
3) Frailty Levels in Geriatric Hospital paTients (FLIGHT)
A systematic review and meta-analysis on the worldwide prevalence of frailty amongst geriatric hospital inpatients (Prospero registration number: 79202). This review systematically searched and analysed the prevalence of frailty within geriatric hospital inpatients within the literature, and performed a subsequent meta-analysis synthesising pooled estimates of the prevalence of frailty and pre-frailty, as well as the prevalence of frailty stratified by age, sex, frailty definition, prevalent morbidities, ward type, and location, among older hospitalised in-patients.
