Award Description
The Bury and Bolton Hometown Award has been created by an alumnus of the University originally from Bury in Greater Manchester. The public funding he gratefully received to study at Birmingham helped him to build his own career. The award is intended to assist students from the donor's hometown who are from a modest family income background, and who have similarly chosen undergraduate study at Birmingham to help them achieve their full potential and underpin their own career.
The award is aimed at providing financial support to students with verified household incomes of below £42,875 who were resident in Bury in Greater Manchester, or Bolton. Awards will be made to support either a career enhancement activity or living costs.
Value of Award
This scholarship is a one-off award valued at £2,000. There are up to 3 awards available each year.
Eligibility Criteria
The Bury and Bolton Hometown award is aimed at students in any undergraduate year of study as long as they are Normally Registered on their course.
Eligible candidates should meet the following criteria:
- Domiciled in the UK
- Have a home address located within Bury in Greater Manchester or Bolton, as verified on your Student Finance application or university student record.
- Have a household income of £42,875 or less, as verified on your Student Finance application (therefore, please ensure you have been means-tested for this academic year).
Students will only be able to receive a Bury and Bolton Hometown Award once during their time at the university. If you have applied previously but have been unsuccessful, we would welcome another application.
How to Apply
Applicants can apply for support under the following themes:
A) Career enhancement – you may have a career enhancement project or activity you wish to undertake (e.g. a workshop, conference, summer school), or require support covering the cost of books or study equipment
B) Living costs – you may be seeking additional funds to help cover heightened living costs, and can demonstrate that receiving an award will enable you to succeed and enjoy your time at university.
In the case that more applications are received than meet the above eligibility criteria, priority will be given to those applying under the career enhancement criteria and will be decided based on strength of their proposal. Please see the application form for further details.
You can make an application by completing the Bury and Bolton Hometown Award application form.
