Award Description

The George Fentham Birmingham Charity was established over 300 years ago to benefit people in the City of Birmingham. The Chairty provides Educational Grants to students under the age of 25 who are long term residents of the City of Birmingham to assist with living expenses, travel expenses, books, IT equipment and other items to help them complete their studies successfully.

Value of Award

The educational grants are intended to help students with their educational expenses. Students in the past have received grants to help with living expenses, travel expenses, books, IT equipment and other items to help them complete their studies successfully. Each award is assessed on the students' individual circumstances.

Eligibility Criteria

The following eligibility criteria apply:
  • Students must be under the age of 25 years at the time the course starts. You must provide proof of age ID.
  • Students must be long term residents (usually for 3 years for reasons other than education) of the City of Birmingham and must live within the boundaries of the City of Birmingham. You must provide written proof of address.
  • All undergraduate students must demonstrate and provide written evidence that they have applied for a Student Maintenance Loan and a Tuition Fee Loan from Student Finance England.
  • All postgraduate students must demonstrate and provide written evidence that they have applied for a non means-tested Student Maintenance Loan https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login.
  • Students attending their first year of college/university will be required to provide evidence from the college/university proving that they have been offered and have accepted a place on the relevant course.
  • Grants cheques will not be issued unless the trustees have received a tutor reference on your previous academic year from your current course, or your previous course (if you have not yet started the course).  The reference should include a report of your progress with your studies and comments on your suitability for the course you are undertaking.

Only one grant per student can be applied for in any academic year. Grant cheques will only be issued to the student applying and not to a parent or guardian or other third party.
