Award Description

The University of Birmingham has a long-standing, proud partnership with the Chevening Scholarship program, supporting future leaders, influencers, and decision-makers from around the world. Each year, the University of Birmingham commits to funding approximately 10 additional Chevening-Birmingham partner awards, enabling even more Chevening Scholars to study at our institution. According to the latest Chevening Partner Report, the University of Birmingham ranks as the 6th most popular choice among Chevening applicants, with roughly 5,600 candidates selecting Birmingham as their study destination.

Chevening Scholarships provide full funding, including tuition, living expenses, and travel, for a one-year master’s degree in the UK, allowing Scholars to focus fully on their studies while they prepare to make meaningful contributions in their home countries. This commitment aligns with the University’s dedication to fostering a diverse, global community and supporting scholars in their journey to drive positive change.

Chevening Scholarships are fully funded, covering:

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for a Chevening Scholarship, you must:

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
  • Commit to returning to your country for at least two years after your award.
  • Have at least two years of work experience (equivalent to 2,800 hours).
  • Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK master’s program.
  • Apply to three eligible UK university courses and have an unconditional offer from at least one by the deadline in the summer, specified by Chevening (see Chevening website).

Ineligibility: Applicants holding British or dual citizenship (except for British Overseas Territories or BN(O) status from Hong Kong) and those who have previously studied in the UK on a government-funded scholarship are not eligible to apply.

How to Apply

The online application form, as well as the full details of application procedure, can be found on the Chevening website.

  1. Application Opening: Chevening applications generally open each year in early August.
  2. Application Deadline: Applications typically close in early November each year.
  3. Selection Process Timeline:
    • Eligibility Sifting: Following the application deadline, all submissions are reviewed to confirm eligibility.
    • Reading Committee Assessments: Independent assessments of eligible applications take place from mid-November through January.
    • Shortlisting for Interviews: Shortlisted candidates are usually notified in February and are invited to interview at British embassies and high commissions.
    • References and Education Documents Deadline: Selected candidates will be required to submit references and education documents before their interview.
    • Interviews: Interviews take place from late February to April.
    • Results Announcement: Results are announced from June onwards.
    • Offer Acceptance Deadline: Candidates must secure at least one unconditional offer from a UK university course by mid-July.
    • UK Studies Commence: Successful scholars start their studies in the UK in September or October.
