You can register your interest to participate in research studies carried out by the Exercise Metabolism Research Group in the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham.
You will be joining a group of people of all ages and ability who participate in our research studies. Your contribution will help advance our research, and although taking part in a research study may not be of immediate benefit to you, it might help people in the future.
Who can register?
Anyone!
Our group interest ranges from sports performance at elite and recreational level to health effects of exercise in obese, ageing and diseased populations. As such we regularly need volunteers to participate in wide-range of research studies.
Registration
The registration form will require you to provide us with your contact details. You will also be given the option to provide us with additional information about yourself (sex, date of birth etc.). We will use this information to decide which studies you may be suitable to participant in. The more information we have, the better able we are to match you with suitable studies. Once you have filled out the registration form, you will receive an email confirming that your details have been placed on our contact list.
Information about studies
You will receive information periodically announcing forthcoming research studies, which you may be eligible to participant in. You are under no obligation to participate in any studies and can decide on a study by study basis if I would like to volunteer. You may also withdraw your name from the mailing list at any time (see below for more details).
Researchers wishing to make a study announcement will have to make a request to the database co-ordinator who will approve and issue all announcements. All our research studies will have been approved by a Research Ethics Committee. Participants will be given full information about the purpose of the research prior to any testing.
When you find a study that interests you and you wish to volunteer or would like to find out more about a particular study please contact the researchers directly. Researcher’s contact details will be included in each study announcement. We will keep a record of which study announcements have been sent to you to avoid duplication, but your decision about the study will not be recorded.
It is also possible that there will not immediately be any suitable studies for some volunteers, but new research studies are starting all the time which may be suitable.
Updating your details
It is important we hold the most up-to-date information about you to ensure we can keep you updated about the latest studies that you may be eligible to participate in. You can update your details at any time by resubmit the Study Volunteer Database Application Form as an “Existing Volunteer (updating record)”. We will ask you to review your details once every 5 years. You will be given six weeks to resubmit the Study Volunteer Database Application Form with a reminder every two weeks. If after the six weeks we have not heard from you, we will remove all your details from our database. You can always re-join the database at any point by going to our website and re-submitting the Study Volunteer Database Application Form as a “New Volunteer”.
Data Protection
All data will be dealt with under the strictest of guidelines and according to the Data Protection Act or any other regulation which may supersede it. We will not hold any information on our database without your written consent. All data is strictly confidential and only available to designated personnel within the Exercise Metabolism Research Group, and our Data Controller.
