About: This masterclass will explore the philosophical and ethical issues which arise when researching mental health. The session uses an interdisciplinary approach with two facilitators: one who brings expertise in philosophy and ethics, and another who brings expertise in psychology with a research background in suicide, self-harm, and sex-offending.
The session will start with an introductory lecture during which the facilitators will provide background on their work and career trajectory. The rest of masterclass will be discussion based and students will work through key concepts and questions underpinning ethical research on sensitive topics. Later in the session participants can apply the knowledge and skills they have gained in a constructive debate. The general topic areas we’ll work through are the concept of mental disorder, research ethics and consent, personal, moral and legal responsibility, politics and stigma, policy and research.
Please note that this masterclass will include discussion of sensitive topics, and we ask that participants are mindful of this when registering.
Additional information: Schools will be limited to 8 places for this class. Individual bookings can be made by students in Years 12 and 13.
