Unresolved issues in inflammation

After a masters in Natural Sciences (Genetics) at the University of Cambridge, Andy Clark did his PhD in the Department of Medicine at the University of Birmingham, studying transcriptional control of insulin genes. He remained in Birmingham for a further two years with a postdoctoral fellowship from Diabetes UK, then spent three years as a postdoc at Cancer Research UK in central London. Between 1996 and 2012 Andy was a lecturer, then senior lecturer, then reader at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology in Hammersmith. In 2012 he was appointed Professor of Inflammation Biology at the University of Birmingham. His main research interest is the role of negative feedback mechanisms in limiting inflammatory responses. With colleagues at the Kennedy Institute he identified an important mechanism by which the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase signalling pathway controls the expression of inflammatory genes, and another mechanism by which anti-inflammatory glucococorticoid drugs target the p38 pathway to switch off the same inflammatory genes. Andy currently holds a programme grant from Arthritis Research UK entitled “Innovative Approaches to Improving the Safety and Efficacy of Glucocorticoids”.
