- Thursday 2 March 2017 (13:00-14:00)
This lecture is the second in the series relating to the University Library's Inspiring Knowledge exhibition and considers the place of the John Stow edition of Chaucer's Works (1561) in the evolution of an accurate textual corpus of the 'Father of English Poetry'. The lecture will consider what Chaucer and his works mean to us today, and will take advantage of its falling on World Book Day (2 March 2017) to consider how far traditional ideas of Chaucer's representing a peculiarly English voice still obtain in the era of globalisation and (pre- and post-Brexit) Europeanisation.
Steve Ellis is Professor of English Literature at the University of Birmingham, he has published extensively on Chaucer and is the author of Chaucer: An Oxford Guide.
Hear Steve introduce the 1561 Works in this short film.
