Resilience and Inclusivity: Exploring Disability-inclusive Disaster Recovery in the Philippines

Discover the intersection of disability, disaster recovery, and international development at a unique event hosted by Dr. David Cobley, lecturer at the University of Birmingham. 

David will explore disability-inclusive approaches to disaster recovery drawing on his research on Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. He will examine the impact of this disaster on disabled individuals and their participation in recovery and community rebuilding processes. In line with this year’s Disability History Month theme, the talk will focus on children and young people’s experiences, offering valuable lessons for those interested in disability and international development. He will also discuss the second edition of his textbook ‘Disability and International Development: A Guide for Students and Practitioners’ which was published by Routledge earlier this year.

Dr. Cobley is a Lecturer in Disability and Development and Director of Education. David’s main teaching and research interests lie within the field of disability and international development. David has taught in the International Development Department since 2012 and has a wealth of experiences over 35 years in the UK disability sector. His research and consultancy work has been based in a number of countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Sierra Leone, India and the Philippines.
