UoB-UNESP Future of Manufacturing Webinar Series: The Policy Challenges of Industry 4.0

The new generation of technologies associated with the notion of Industry 4.0 are expected to bring about major transformations of our social, economic, and industrial systems. The development, diffusion and societal impact of these technologies will however be significantly influenced by the policies adopted by different national and regional governments in areas such as industrial development, education, training and employment, as well as privacy and data management. As part of our series of webinars exploring the social and economic impact of the new generation of digital and advanced manufacturing technologies this webinar focuses of the policy challenges of Industry 4.0.

Speakers

Mafini Sarratou Dosso, PhD

Mafini currently serves as the Economist and Policy Analyst at the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), Dir. B Growth & Innovation in Seville, Spain. She has an extensive experience in the study of innovation and industry development policies at the EU level and in sub-Saharan Africa. Within the GLORIA project (https://iri.jrc.ec.europa.eu/home/), she has worked for more than 4 years on the analysis of R&I investments from the world top R&D-investing companies in order to provide firm-level evidence for the EU industrial and innovation policy agenda. Her latest works in the field have focused on the qualitative analysis of global innovation networks and on the readiness of EU policies for Industry 4.0. Prior to joining the EU JRC, she has contributed to the drafting of the thematic sections for Innovation Policy Platform Initiative, a joint OECD & World Bank project. Since 2017, Mafini is leading the scientific works on Smart Specialisation Strategies with Africa.

Ms. Dosso is fluent in French, English and Spanish and holds a doctorate in Economics of innovation and a Master II in Economics of Industry & Services from the University of Paris, Panthéon-Sorbonne in France. Her doctoral thesis analyzes the long-term relationships between national innovation systems and the technological and productive specialisation of OECD countries.

ZHOU Yuan (Joseph)

Joseph is Associate Professor with Tenure at the School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University (China). He also serves as the Assistant Director of China Institute for Engineering Development Strategies. He is also a guest (senior) lecturer at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). His recent research interests include public policy, innovation policy, and innovation management. His ongoing projects involve “Technology Foresight with Big-data and Machine Learning Methods”, “Public demonstration projects for strategic emerging industries in China”, “Strategic roadmapping methods for new energy technologies in China”, “Technological trajectories for climate change mitigation in Europe, China and lndia”, and “High-value engineering network in Europe and China”, etc. Based on these projects, he has published several papers in Industrial & Corporate Change, Science and Public Policy, Technological Forecasting & Social Change (TFSC), IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management (TEM), Nano Energy (IF=13.2), Engineering (Chinese Academy of Engineering Journal), Journal of Cleaner Production, Energy Policy, Scientometrics, Sustainable Development, Technology Analysis & Strategic Management, International Journal of Technology Management, etc. He serves as the Department Editor of IEEE TEM, as well as the guest editor of IEEE TEM, R&D Management, and Scientometrics. He also serves as the editorial board member of TFSC. He received his PhD degree (technology management) from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 2010. Prior to his PhD, Joseph was a manager at Cascadia Capital on technology commercialization & transfer practice. Before that, he was a manager at Nanyang Techno-entrepreneurship Centre, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), involving in technology entrepreneurship activities. ZHOU Yuan holds B.Eng and M.Sc degree from Nanyang Technological University.
