Benjamin Zephaniah - Black History Month 2024

We are delighted to launch Black History Month 2024, celebrating the cultures and histories of our Black community.

The UK theme for this year is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ #reclaimingnarratives. From staff members exploring their own generational narratives at our panel events, the power of storytelling through our various film screenings and lectures, to reclaiming the narrative of our campus through Heritage Walks, we have weaved the theme throughout our programme.

To mark the passing of one of Birmingham’s cultural icons, we have chosen Benjamin Zephaniah as our image for Black History Month. There will be a day of celebration for him on Wednesday 30th October with a range of activities to engage with.

The activities for Black History Month have been put together by departments and individuals from across the University and the staff Race Equality Network. If you would like to join the Race Equality Network you can learn more here Race Equality Network

This programme has been created to enhance our staff community so please do engage with as much as possible, and encourage and facilitate colleagues to do so too.

In addition to the University's events, which are listed below, you can also take part in events across Birmingham
