Lunchtime talk | Exhibition Introduction - Peace and Noise

The Barber Institute's lunchtime talks are delivered by staff, students, academics and researchers at the Barber and our wider University of Birmingham community. Focused on key works in our exhibitions and collection, the talks take place in the gallery and are an informal and interesting way of looking closely at artwork.

Sound is part of all environments, though in an age of visual culture, it can often be ignored. Peace and Noise seeks to introduce ideas of sound to art, thinking not only about how the past might have sounded, but also what these sounds might have meant. Definitions of peace, noise and listening will be explored in the display and this lunchtime talk, providing opportunities to think about both sound and art in a new way.

Peace and Noise is curated by Becky Owen-Keats, a doctoral researcher within the Department of Art History, Curating and Visual Studies. Becky's research is concerned with how still images depict sound. Becky has worked at Kettle's Yard, Fitzwilliam Museum, Dulwich Picture Gallery, Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village and the National Museum of Scotland.
