Public art at University station

'Passing Through'
Sarah Taylor Silverwood (b. 1986)
2024

'Passing Through' was commissioned by the University to celebrate the new University train station being built and to bring public art to all those who visit and travel through.

This work evokes the transience of time and passing of seasons echoed in fallen leaves. In art history, reading has often been depicted in portraits and Sarah explores this through a contemporary lens. Watch Sarah talk through the symbolism and shifted perspectives in her work 'Passing Through'.

Artist biography

Sarah Taylor Silverwood is an artist based in Birmingham. She grew up in The Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. Sarah’s drawing practice works across animation, illustration, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, public art and print.

Sarah explores different themes, subjects and stories, revisiting narratives, imagery, language and people that have become fixed by familiarity, a particular time, attitude or viewpoint. Through her drawing, she reanimates them, creating renewed visibility, a shifted perspective or an updated relevance for them in the present day.

Sarah was artist in residence at The British Consulate in Chicago (2014) and The University of Birmingham (2013), and recipient of the 2019 Feeney Fellowship.
