BRIDGE Brazil Fellowship in Global South Development and Diplomacy

We are excited to announce the launch of the inaugural BRIDGE Global South Fellowship, an initiative aimed at supporting early career scholars from Africa and Brazil. This fellowship is a collaboration between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and the University of Birmingham (UoB), focusing on bridging diplomacy and development in the Global South.

Fellowship Overview

The BRIDGE Global South Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for scholars to engage in a two-month research visit split between UIUC and UoB during the Spring/Summer terms of the 2024/25 AY (21 January - 23 May 2025). This program is designed to foster academic collaboration and insight into the challenges and opportunities within development and diplomacy in the Global South, with particular emphasis on African and/or Brazilian affairs.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be early career scholars (within 5 years of obtaining their PhD) originating from countries within the African continent and Brazil.

Applicants must demonstrate expertise in areas relevant to development and diplomacy in the Global South.

Financial Support

Travel Contribution and Living Allowance: A stipend of $2,850 to cover travel expenses to UIUC and £2,246 for the stay at UoB

Application Requirements

  •  A research proposal of no more than six pages, outlining your study plans and how they contribute to the theme of "Bridging Diplomacy and Development in the Global South."
  • Current CV highlighting relevant research, publications, and academic achievements.
  • The names of academics at UIUC and UoB to act as potential mentors.
  • Proof of citizenship or residence in a qualifying country of the Global South.

Selection Process

Candidates will be evaluated by a committee composed of faculty from UIUC and UoB based on their research proposal, academic merit, and potential impact of their work on the development and diplomacy in the Global South

Notification of outcome: w/c 11 November 2024.
