Help find cancer faster, treat it better and with fewer side-effects
You see very similar changes in the same groups of genes across cancers in different parts of the body. Our breakthroughs at Birmingham have identified how we can maximise this knowledge to share treatments across cancer types to accelerate progress, and impact on patients.
Every type of cancer is unique, yet there are similarities in how they grow and respond to treatment. The University has made major progress in diagnosing and treating cancer, especially in understanding what is going on in a patient’s cells to make treatments more effective; what if we could find where knowledge developed for one kind of cancer might also help another?
Bring everything we know about cancer together
You can help researchers at Birmingham develop quicker diagnosis and better treatments with less aggressive and fewer long-term side effects. Our Clinical Trials Unit is the biggest of its kind in Europe. Our cutting-edge work, which could have broad impact on many types of cancer, includes:
- Blood cancer: training our immune system to recognise and target cancer cells
- Bowel cancer: growing a sample of the individual’s cancer in the lab to test dozens of drugs on, so patients do not lose critical time or face nasty side effects unnecessarily
- Bladder cancer: delivering a less-invasive test that could help identify cancer earlier
- Brain cancer: developing drugs that can get through the protective barrier around the brain
- Childhood cancer: creating less toxic treatments for children, avoiding lifelong side-effects
Professor Pam Kearns needs your support
‘My own specialism is childhood cancers; developing drugs that are more effective and kinder for children to endure, then getting them quickly to those who need them through clinical trials. Gifts from alumni and friends support research into better diagnosis and new kinds of therapies which we wouldn’t otherwise be able to do. Your support gives hope to patients and families affected by cancer.’
