My name’s Mike Hammond, I’m the Chief Executive of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity, supporting the patients who are treated here at the Queen Elizabeth and Selly Oak hospitals. The Hospital Charity doesn’t just work in isolation. We work with a lot of companies and influential people within the city and I think it’s really important that we have somebody here at the Charity who’s a firm advocate of the City and is proud of Birmingham and all the work it does to support not just the hospital but all our patients.

Coming to the university really helped me to grow as a person. It helped me to learn from other people and it really taught me how to think. I’m very proud of having studied at the University of Birmingham and the city’s a wonderful place to live and work. I’ve moved around the country a lot with work and always kept an eye on the Midlands and when the opportunity came to come and run the Hospital Charity here, I jumped at the chance.

Birmingham’s a really important city, not just for the Midlands but for the UK as a whole and I think it’s really important that we have people working here in the city who are prepared to stand up and say what a good place it is to live and work.

The university was a wonderful place to come and study and it’s also a wonderful place to come and get involved. I got involved in running a university football team and have developed life-long friendships with people around the country.

Birmingham’s a wonderful place for you to develop your career and has got great people working around the city. I’d recommend anybody who’s looking at where to work to consider living and working in Birmingham.
