Dr Richard Hood:
Hello and welcome to the Makerspace. This is one of the labs within the School of Engineering that our student cohort use. They use it to help design, build, and test prototypes for their designs.
Kiran:
So, my product is based on hybrid machinery, it's a proof of concept of hybrid machines, so essentially, I'm going to add a subtractive spindle to this 3D printer, so we're going to do additive and subtractive manufacturing at the same time.
Cutaway of the Makerspace facilities, showing 3D printers and tech.
I use the space to keep this, use the printers, and have access to the machinery that lets me do all this.
James:
As part of my final year, I have to complete my final year project.
I've been lucky enough to be able to do that with the team and designers this wind tunnel here, which is in partnership with the team.
Cutaway of the UBRacing design space, showing students working on building parts for a car.
I was able to do this with the help from the Makerspace, and everything here you can see has been printed or made in the Makerspace at the University of Birmingham.
Benjamin:
So, my project is printing carbon fibre reinforced polymer leaf springs as an alternative material. Indicates to 3D printer beside him. This is the mark forge mark two carbon fibre reinforced polymer printer.

My favourite part about using the Makerspace is that we get to come in and use 3D printers, they've been made available fully to us for final year projects. In previous years we were in the old Engineering building, and we didn't have a space like this where we could come in, use the prototyping capabilities and things like that. So, it's just nice to have some hands-on engineering experience.
