Workshop: An Introduction to South Asian Music Ensemble

University Music is delighted to announce an upcoming workshop during UoB Xtra, introducing students from across campus to our new South Asian Music Ensemble, due to be launched in October 2024.
Led by Sarvar Sabri and Gulfam Sabri, University Music are partnering with the Sonia Sabri Company to bring opportunities for musicians and instrumentalists to work with leading practitioners of South Asian music.
All students are welcome and participation is open to anyone (regardless of whether you play or perform on either a non-Western or Western instrument).

Sarvar Sabri
Sarvar Sabri is an internationally renowned, award-winning tabla player, composer, and the Musical Director of Sonia Sabri Company. He has worked with the world’s leading vocalists, musicians, and dancers. He teaches regular classes at Sonia Sabri Company’s music school in Birmingham, performs nationally and internationally, and composes music for theatre, dance, radio, and television.
Gulfam Sabri
Gulfam Sabri is an internationally acclaimed Sufiana and Ghazal vocalist from New Delhi, India. Also skilled in santoor, harmonium and tabla, Gulfam has performed widely across the US, Europe, Africa, Australia, South-East Asia, and India, collaborating with musicians from both Eastern and Western traditions in both the music and theatre industries. Committed to musical education, Gulfam has taught in schools, universities, and conservatoires in the UK and internationally.
Sonia Sabri Company
Sonia Sabri Company is an award-winning dance and music company that creates and tours performances nationally and internationally. The Company has over 20 years’ experience of working with schools, cultural organisations and communities in Birmingham, the Black Country and across the UK.
