[Voice over] The West Midlands Combined Authority Geography is a uniquely diverse and concentrated market for energy system solutions. Our rich history as a crucible of industrial innovation provides a firm foundation for our endeavours.
We have great plans to build on our heritage of civic pride and municipal ambition. Energy Capital will align with the West Midlands Combined Authority to maximize the potential to influence and benefit from regulatory and political developments. Our local enterprise partnerships provide a platform for constructive collaboration between a wide range of stakeholders.
Over fifty six thousand people are employed in the energy sector across Birmingham, Solihull, Coventry, Warwickshire and the Black Country. Our four million people living in 1.7 million homes in the center of the UK spend over 10 billion pounds a year on fuel and energy to live their lives. What if we could harness the momentum of that spending power to transform our region?
We are home to many fine institutions which have a distinguished history of research and discovery. They are built on a culture of addressing our region's needs, connected with industry and engaged with its challenges. More recently a constellation of investments by central governments including the Energy Research Accelerator and Energy Systems Catapult has cemented the West Midlands defining role in leading Britain's energy sector.
Energy Capital leverages our world-class innovation assets building on this critical mass to deliver economic benefits for the region. Energy Capital aims to make the West Midlands one of the world's most attractive locations for developing and building innovative, clean technology companies. We will achieve this by meeting the growing need of our industries and citizens for competitive, clean, flexible and secure power. There will be more than 50 billion pounds of plan and spending in infrastructure and building in the next decade.
Our approach is to maximize the benefits of significant investments in HS2 new commercial developments and housing across the West Midlands Combined Authority area. This will encourage the systematic adoption of locally appropriate and leading-edge energy solutions. The diversity, flexibility and experience of the West Midlands supply chain provides powerful support to the commercialisation of energy systems innovation across the region.
In the past it has always been through competitive collaboration and partnership that we've got things done, it's this culture that makes the West Midlands a natural home for energy innovators. Beneath the surface you'll find a proven track record of transforming our energy systems to power a vibrant knowledge economy.
Energy Capital will provide a regional context for energy system deployments engaging citizens, communities and public authorities. In this environment entrepreneurs and university spinouts will thrive, global investors will be competing to invest and customers will be the first to benefit.
We are focused on growing entire industrial and local energy market systems not just on launching products and companies. Transforming our energy system to meet the demands of 21st century businesses and citizens is a complex challenge and a significant economic opportunity.
Energy Capital is the place where global market opportunities, academic expertise, pressing regional needs and public demand meet. The jobs that are created as a result of Energy Capital projects will be highly skilled requiring a workforce with higher level qualifications and advanced skills. Developing the energy sectors talent base is essential to speeding the innovation cycle and the introduction of novel energy technologies.
A vibrant energy sector has the potential to make an enormous contribution to the greening of the Midlands industrial base creating new jobs and opportunities for future generations as well as ensuring that the region has a clean environment where they can live. Energy Capital will accelerate the rates of change and set the pace for whole energy systems transformation creating innovative technologies, systems and business models that will change the world.
