Dipak Kotecha 2023
Professor Dipak Kotecha

You are invited to attend the inaugural lecture of Professor Dipak Kotecha, from the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, entitled: 'Big data making the heart work better'.

Dipak Kotecha is a Professor of Cardiology at the University of Birmingham, and an NHS Consultant at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.  Heart and circulatory diseases remains one of the UK’s most important public health issues, with one death occurring every three minutes, and twice as many people suffering these conditions as cancer and Alzheimer’s combined. Dipak’s research has focused on the interaction of two common heart conditions that put a heavy burden on patients, their families and the NHS – atrial fibrillation and heart failure.  In recent years, Dipak has led international teams to make better use of routinely-collected health data, supporting new research that can improve how patients are managed.

In this lecture, he will describe how robust approaches to big data are transforming clinical research for patients, including the application of artificial intelligence and new technology.  Innovative yet pragmatic clinical trials can now be embedded into usual NHS care, with the potential to radically change how we prevent disease and improve patient outcomes.
