Why did you apply to the University of Birmingham?
The reason I chose to come to the UK is because it is at the forefront of aerospace developments alongside the USA. I believe the quality of education is far higher than most places and universities in the UK provide a more holistic experience. Not only are students well supported academically there is a lot of focus on the welfare of students. I specifically chose University of Birmingham because it is a very international setting with incredible credentials. The resources students have are truly unheard of in other countries, this was a key factor in deciding to study at university of Birmingham.
What are the best points of your course?
The content is challenging but very well conveyed by lecturers. I enjoy that lecturers and academics engage with students. Students also have access to a wealth of resources such as labs, equipment, literature and much more.
What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
Thus far I enjoy that there are so many opportunities beyond mandatory classes to engage in the professional field I intend to enter into after my degree. Some of these opportunities include careers networks, guest speakers and training sessions. I have been able to explore career opportunities despite only being in my first year. Another aspect which exceeds expectations is the willingness of many of my lecturers and module directors to engage with students and promote passion for the subject.
What’s your highlight of your time at the University?
The highlight would be engaging with people from across the University in a variety of faculties. I’ve been able to become involved with the guild of students and learn the administrative process of the university and the guild. I enjoy that students have mechanisms that allow them to implement the changes that would enhance their university experience and community.
What advice would you give to other international students?
I would say it is very important to be well informed of the events that happen on campus because they provide opportunities to network.. Becoming involved in societies and committees outside of your course is essential to build a strong resume of transferable skills. It is also important to familiarise yourself with the systems in place to aid students in their studies such as the welfare system, the guild of students, the mentor scheme, the student representative system and others.
What do you like most about the city?
I enjoy that it is very easy and economical to get around the city. Birmingham is one of the most diverse cities I’ve seen. The different quarters of the city are wonderful to explore, each shows a unique style of architecture and atmosphere.
