Why did you apply to the University of Birmingham?
After coming to the applicants open day, I feel genuinely welcome by both the students and staff. On top of that, the School of Chemical Engineering has a good reputation in the UK and is one of the few universities that focus on food engineering development which is my subject of interest.
What are the best points of your course?
Choosing the option with Industrial study gives me an advantage in securing a job and allows me to make full use of the theory I learn in class and apply it in a real life situation.
What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?
Despite the challenging course and high expectations from the school, the staff are really helpful and always available to help when needed. The tutor gives strong wellbeing support, ensuring that we are up to the pace of the course.
What’s your highlight of your time at the University?
The huge diversity of the community that I met here. The Singapore society and Indonesian society has been a huge help in guiding me throughout my first few months here. The Vale firework display is also amazing! A good time to bond with your friends and find new friends.
What advice would you give to other international students?
Do join your country society when you are here! Its always good to have a piece of home when you are away. Moreover, do join the fresher's events! It’s a good opportunity to find new friends!
What do you like most about the city?
As the second biggest city in the UK, Birmingham has a lot to offer. From the shopping district with various price ranges to the international food. There is also a Chinese New Year celebration in the Chinese Quarter!
How do you feel you have benefitted from the experience of studying in the UK?
Studying in the UK has definitely made me more independent as an individual. It also allows me to understand the different cultures as the University of Birmingham is widely diverse. There is also a more practical and real-life example when learning the materials here, helping us to see the material how working engineers see it.
