A physics lecturer at the University of Birmingham has clinched a prestigious award for his contribution to the field of high energy physics.

Dr Philip Ilten, a physics academic and member of the Birmingham Particle Physics research group, has been awarded the Guido Altarelli Award by the International Workshop on Deep-Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and Related Subjects.  The award honours the memory of the late Guido Altarelli, one of the founding fathers of the quantum chromodynamics (QDC) theory, an outstanding communicator of particle physics, and a mentor and strong supporter of junior scientists.

The Guido Altarelli Award consists of a certificate and prize money. It is awarded to Junior Scientists for outstanding scientific contributions to the fields covered by the DIS Conference series. Originally, the award was due to be made at the annual workshops on Deep-Inelastic Scattering (DIS) and Related Subjects in March. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Ilten will receive the award at a virtual prize-giving ceremony later today (Thursday 11 June).

Dr Ilten's current research is focused on understanding the emergent properties of quantum chromodynamics and looking for possible connections between hidden dark sectors and ordinary matter.
