The University’s £50 million Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry opened its doors to students and patients in April 2016. The new facility is the first integrated, stand-alone dental hospital and school to be built in the UK for almost 40 years.
Based at Pebble Mill, just a mile from the University’s central campus, the landmark building has been developed by Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, the University of Birmingham and Birmingham, Solihull LIFT (BaS LIFT) and Calthorpe Estates. The development is a key element of the new Edgbaston Medical Quarter and further enhances the city’s reputation as a hub of Medicine and Life Sciences.
For our Patients
The four-storey dental hospital and school of dentistry is home to the College of Medical and Dental Sciences’ School of Dentistry, and all dental services are accessed by the public are in one wing of the building. The facility is equipped to treat over 120,000 patients a year in areas including unscheduled emergency dental care, restorative dentistry, oral surgery, oral medicine, orthodontics and paediatric dentistry. There are a total of 154 dentist chairs and over 1,000 expert staff members on hand.
For our Students
The Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry provides world-class research facilities and a modern learning environment for more than 600 undergraduate and postgraduate students and trainees. The £50 million building has been built especially for our student’s advancement, and will bring dental teaching in the Midlands into the 21st century.
The new building combines the latest thinking, optimum building design, and state-of-the-art facilities with flexibility. For example, the integration of our dental services requires adaptability therefore, rather than having staff in a series of self-contained units, the building allows staff physical integration to complement the service amalgamation. Furthermore, the schools close proximity to the main campus allows our dentistry students to move easily between clinics, lectures, and social activities at the Guild of Students and fitness activities at the University’s sports club.
