Title: Why Study Electronic and Electrical Engineering? | University of Birmingham
Duration: 01.17
Begins
[Aidan] My name is Aidan, and I study Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Birmingham.
I chose to study Electrical Engineering at Birmingham because I knew that it was a course that would let me explore different avenues of engineering, such as mechanical, civil, and mechatronics.
My favourite aspect of the course is when I get to do project work.
I also enjoyed my placement which was a fantastic opportunity, where I got to work on my professional development and get an understanding of what it's like in an office environment.
I knew that going to Birmingham would be a really good opportunity, because you have so many resources.
The Makerspace is a great resource where you are welcome to start your own projects.
My advice to prospective students is get stuck in, don't be shy.
Lecturers are always willing to help.
They're always ready to hear your questions.
And if you are nervous about anything, or don't quite understand anything, always feel free to speak to a lecturer because they'll be more than happy to help you.
I really enjoyed Electrical Engineering, but I also didn’t want to let go of Mechanical Engineering fully. Luckily, I saw this course and thought it was the best match for me as it is more electrical based, but you still get to learn some mechanics.
Learn how to design and use intelligent mechatronic and robotic platforms to solve real-world problems with Mechatronic and Robotic Engineering at Birmingham. Our programme combines elements of mechanical, computer and electrical engineering, helping you become a well-rounded graduate ready for a career in industry.
Your first year is shared across the disciplines of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering.
It provides a contemporary and flexible approach that builds upon essential engineering fundamentals to develop your broader understanding of behaviour, policy, entrepreneurship, and global perspectives and kindles the passion necessary to address challenges within society.

Engineering is a practical subject, and at Birmingham your theoretical learning is supported by practical lab sessions throughout the programme. In the early years of our programmes, electronics labs are taught in the Collaborative Teaching Laboratory (CTL) Dry Lab, a 170-seat facility with a range of high-quality teaching equipment provided by internationally-leading companies such as National Instruments.
In your final year, you'll have access to our Electronics Project Lab in the School of Engineering building, with more powerful bench supplies, oscilloscopes, and soldering equipment. Our Makerspace facility will give you access to fabrication tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and PCB printing.
You'll receive plenty of feedback to help you progress, ranging from written feedback on your assessments to class feedback sessions and discussions with your tutor. The feedback will highlight the positives of your work as well as any areas that need more attention.
You'll be assigned a personal tutor who'll remain with you throughout your studies to help you in three important areas: supporting your academic progress, developing transferable skills and dealing with any welfare issues.
You'll also need to undertake a considerable amount of self study. It's an essential part of the programme, which requires self motivation and enthusiasm for your subject. It also allows you to pursue your own lines of enquiry and become an independent thinker.
