Why are we offering flexibility around grades for incoming students on some programmes?

Each year the University can offer a level of flexibility to students on certain courses who have not quite met the terms of their offer. We know that waiting for results can be a stressful time for prospective students, and we want to alleviate that pressure so that students can concentrate on their current studies without worrying about getting into their first-choice university. Commitment to the University and a passion for your subject are important to us, and we are committed to supporting the academic success of students joining us.

Will I receive an amended offer?

Unless you are an ROP applicant, the flexibility is automatically reflected in the alternative conditions provided in your offer letter.

Is there anything I need to do?

No. If you make us your firm choice, then the flexibility will automatically be applied in your alternative conditions.

I want to defer my place until 2026, does this flexibility still apply?

The flexibility applies to students who intend to begin their studies in Autumn 2025.

Why does the flexibility only apply to the courses above?

All courses receive different numbers of applications each year and so the level of flexibility we can offer depends on the demand for a course and the number of students that we can teach on a programme. This is to ensure that we are able to offer the best possible student experience once you’re here.

Can the grade flexibility apply to A-Level grade equivalences?

The grade flexibility is applied in your alternative offer, equivalencies may be accepted at Confirmation and Clearing however there is no guarantee of this. Please note, D grade equivalencies will not be accepted. For example, if your offer is to achieve A, A, A in your A-Levels we will be able to accept you with A, A, B not A*, A*, D.

Please note that you will still need to achieve any specific module requirements that are stated in your offer.

I have received a Pathways to Birmingham offer – what does this mean for me?

If you have received an offer for the programmes listed above, it means we are likely to be able to accept you up to one grade below your Pathways to Birmingham offer if you have made us your firm (first) choice. This is already reflected in your alternative conditions. There may be certain subject specific minimum requirements that still have to be met as specified in your offer letter.

Please be aware that your P2B scholarship is still dependent on you achieving the standard prospectus offer for your course.

I have received a contextual offer- what does this mean for me?

If you have received an offer for the programmes listed above, it means we are likely to be able to accept you up to one grade below your contextual offer if you have made us your firm (first) choice. This is already reflected in your alternative conditions. There may be certain subject specific minimum requirements that still have to be met as specified in your offer letter.

I have received an EPQ offer – what does this mean for me?

If you have received an offer for the programmes listed above, it means we are likely to be able to accept you up to one grade below your EPQ offer if you have made us your firm (first) choice. This is already reflected in your alternative conditions. There may be certain subject specific minimum requirements that still have to be met as specified in your offer letter.

I have received an ROP offer – what does this mean for me?

If you have received an offer for one of the programmes listed above, we are able to accept you to one grade below your ROP offer if you have made us your firm (first) choice. As you are still entitled to an ROP offer without making us your firm choice, this is NOT reflected in your alternative offer at present. If you put us as your first choice your alternative conditions will be amended and a new offer letter will be issued later in the cycle.

We will be able to accept you with one grade below the grades stated in your offer. For example, if your offer is to achieve D, D, D in your BTEC we will be able to accept you with D, D, M.

Please note that you will still need to achieve any specific module requirements that are stated in your offer.
