Why are we offering flexibility around grades for incoming students on some programmes?
Each year during Confirmation (Results Day), the University can offer a level of flexibility to students who have applied to the University and not quite met the grades detailed in their offer. We know that waiting for results can be a stressful time for prospective students, and we want to alleviate that pressure so that students can concentrate on their current studies without worrying about getting into their first-choice university. Commitment to the University and a passion for your subject are important to us, and we are committed to supporting the academic success of students joining us.

No, your offer remains unchanged, but we are confirming our commitment to being flexible with the grades you achieve in the summer.
Is there anything I need to do?
Is there anything I need to do?
No. If you make us your firm choice, then the flexibility will automatically be applied when we receive your results in the summer.

The flexibility applies to students who intend to begin their studies in Autumn 2024.

All courses receive different numbers of applications each year and so the level of flexibility we are able to offer depends on the demand for a course and the number of students that we can teach on a programme, to ensure that we are able to offer the best possible student experience once you’re here.
Can the grade flexibility apply to A-Level grade equivalences?
Can the grade flexibility apply to A-Level grade equivalences?
No, the grade flexibility only applies to one grade below those stated in your offer. For example, if your offer is to achieve A, A, A in your A-Levels we will be able to accept you with A, A, B not A*, A*, D.
Please note that you will still need to achieve any specific module requirements that are stated in your offer.

I have received a Pathways to Birmingham offer - how does this affect me?
If you have received an email about flexibility for your programme, it means we are likely to be able to accept you up to one grade below your Pathways to Birmingham offer if you have made us your firm (first) choice. There may be certain subject specific minimum requirements that still have to be met as specified in your offer letter.
Please be aware that your P2B scholarship is still dependent on you achieving the standard prospectus offer for your course.

There may be certain subject-specific minimum requirements that still have to be met as specified in your offer letter.

If you have received an email about flexibility for your programme, it means we are likely to be able to accept you up to one grade below your EPQ offer if you have made us your firm (first) choice. There may be certain subject specific minimum requirements that still have to be met as specified in your offer letter.

I am studying for a BTEC Extended Diploma - what does this mean for me?
As stated in our email, we will be able to accept you with one grade below the grades stated in your offer. For example, if your offer is to achieve D, D, D in your BTEC we will be able to accept you with D, D, M.
Please note that you will still need to achieve any specific module requirements that are stated in your offer.
I am studying a combination of A-Level and BTEC qualifications - how does this affect me?
I am studying a combination of A-Level and BTEC qualifications - how does this affect me?
As stated in our email, we will be able to accept you with one grade below those stated in your offer. This can be applied to either an A-Level or BTEC qualification.
For example:
If your offer is to achieve grades A, B in A-Levels and Distinction in a BTEC, you could be accepted either with grades B, B in your A-Levels and Distinction in your BTEC, or with grades A, B in your A-Levels and Merit in your BTEC.
If our email confirmed a requirement to achieve a specific grade in an A-Level subject, you will need to achieve this grade. The one-grade flexibility will be applied to any other qualification stated in your offer.
For example:
If your offer stated A-Level grades A, B and BTEC Distinction and we have confirmed you must achieve Grade A in a specific A-Level, we will be able to accept you with grade A in the relevant A-Level, grade B in your second A-Level and Merit in your BTEC.

I'm studying the IB Diploma/IB Diploma subjects at Higher Level - how does this affect me?
As stated in our email, we will be able to accept you with one grade below the Higher Level grades stated in your offer. This can be applied to any of your Higher Levels unless our email states a requirement for a specific grade in a certain subject. Where our email stated this, the one grade flexibility may be applied to any other Higher Level subject.
Higher Level grades are matched to A-Level grades as follows:
