0:04 I'm Abi and

0:05 I studied Biomedical Science at the University of Birmingham.

0:09 I'm currently working as a Patient Safety Scientist in Oncology

0:13 at AstraZeneca.

0:15 My role day-to-day is a lot of data analysis.

0:19 We have a lot of safety database systems that we run a lot of reports on.

0:25 So, it's mainly analysing that data, identifying any trends in the data

0:30 and then being able to do more detailed research

0:33 into any safety topics that might arise.

0:37 The course at Birmingham really stood out to me

0:40 because of the great variety of modules that is available on the course.

0:44 I also think that the modules are really nicely

0:47 organised with a range of teaching styles.

0:50 You have lectures, small group teaching sessions,

0:54 wet lab-based sessions, and also more computer data science sessions.

0:58 I think these all complemented each other really well, and I was able to get

1:02 a really in-depth understanding of each module,

1:05 with also having the space to do my own interest kind of research, as well.

1:10 I think the academic support that I received was really great.

1:13 I had the same personal tutor throughout my whole three years

1:17 through the course, and this meant that I was able to build a really strong

1:21 relationship with my tutor, and I'm actually still in touch with her now.

1:25 She was able to give me great support of the specifics of the course,

1:31 but also that all-round holistic support that you inevitably

1:35 need when you're at Uni.

1:37 Whilst studying at University of Birmingham,

1:40 I took a year out to do a placement year in industry.

1:44 I think this really gave me a great exposure to the working world,

1:48 and gave me some really nice experience to kind of lay the foundations

1:52 for applying for jobs

1:53 once I graduated.

1:55 I personally really did enjoy that year.

1:57 I think it gave me really unique experience

2:01 that was attractive to employers when I was applying for jobs.

2:05 I'd really encourage current students to make

2:08 the most of all the resources that are available to them.

2:11 Careers Network has so many things on offer.

2:14 When I was studying, I had people in the Medical school

2:18 that were dedicated to my course, and they were able

2:22 to give me really specific advice on the industry that I wanted to go into.

2:26 I would really recommend studying at the University of Birmingham.

2:30 There's so many amazing facilities here.

2:32 Great sports facilities, great academic and educational facilities.

2:37 And I do really feel like the Uni invests into the students’

2:41 experience to make it as good as possible.

2:44 I really enjoyed my time here.

My Journey to AstraZeneca

My role day-to-day involves a lot of data analysis. We use various safety database systems to run reports, analyze data, and identify trends. If any safety topics arise, I conduct more detailed research to understand them better.

While studying at the University of Birmingham, I took a year out for a placement in the industry. This gave me great exposure to the working world and provided valuable experience that laid the foundations for applying to jobs after graduation. I personally really enjoyed that year—it gave me unique experience that was attractive to employers.

How studying at Birmingham prepared me for my career

The course at Birmingham stood out to me because of the variety of modules available. The structure of the course was well-organized with different teaching styles, including lectures, small group teaching sessions, wet lab-based sessions, and computer-based data science sessions. These complemented each other well, giving me an in-depth understanding of each module while allowing space for independent research.

The academic support I received was also excellent. I had the same personal tutor throughout my three years, which helped me build a strong relationship with her. I'm still in touch with her now! She provided not only course-specific guidance but also holistic support, which was invaluable during my time at university.

Why did I study at Birmingham?

I would highly recommend studying at the University of Birmingham. There are incredible facilities, from academic and educational resources to outstanding sports facilities. I really feel like the university invests in its students to make their experience as good as possible. I truly enjoyed my time here.
