Disability support for students
Find out how the Student Disability Service supports disabled students at Birmingham.
The Student Disability Service can provide you with support if you have a disability which impacts your ability to study.
What we can do for you
You are disabled under the Equality Act 2010 if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a 'substantial' and 'long-term' negative effect on your ability to carry out normal daily activities, including studying.
This includes:
- long-term mental or physical health conditions
- specific learning difficulties
- autism spectrum conditions.
If you think you may face barriers to your learning during your time at university because of a disability, we can give you the support and guidance needed to help you to have a good university experience.
The support we offer includes:
- creating a Reasonable Adjustment Plan (RAP) to inform your School of your requirements.
- working with Colleges to maintain up-to-date Inclusive Practice Standards (Word - 518KB).
- arranging exam adjustments, for example, extra time or rest breaks, depending upon your individual needs.
- supporting you in accessing non-medical helper support such as a specialist mentor or study skills tutor.
- supporting applications for the Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) and in setting up DSA funded support.
- providing advice and guidance on screenings for students who think they might have dyslexia, dyspraxia, or dyscalculia.
- arranging library, parking, and housing accommodations.
