Our Master's degree in Migration Studies will introduce you to the main challenges and opportunities associated with the advent of new migration and super-diversity and equip you with the skills and knowledge you will need to address those challenges.
This Migration Studies degree is the first of its kind to focus on superdiversity. You will be taught by academics from the Institute for Research into Superdiversity (IRiS). IRiS is the world’s first research centre to focus on superdiversity and is at the forefront of international migration research. You will have the opportunity to apply for a work-based internship in a migration-related organisation as part of the optional Migration and Superdiversity Placement module.
This course will run over 12 months in a full-time mode. There is also scope to undertake the programme on a part-time basis.

The MA Migration Studies includes diverse teaching methods, social world learning, and field trips to Birmingham City Council and Parliament.
You will be taught by those who are involved in cutting-edge research and who write the publications that you will study. You will primarily be taught by academics from the Institute for Research into Superdiversity (IRIS). IRiS is the world’s first research centre to focus on superdiversity and is at the forefront of international migration research. IRiS offers a unique opportunity for you to work alongside scholars from a wide range of disciplines engaged in migration research, as well as to participate in a programme of related research events.
The course comprises of a series of taught core (100 credits) and optional modules (80 credits).

For entry into this programme, you will normally have an undergraduate degree of at least 2:1. Applicants with a 2:2 degree classification will be considered on a case-by-case basis if you have extensive related work experience. International applicants will be required to hold an IELT 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each band or equivalent qualification.

If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification.

Improve your knowledge of spoken and written English in preparation for studying at Birmingham with our pre-sessional English courses. If you have a conditional offer, you can take one of these courses as an alternative to retaking IELTS or other similar qualifications.

The fees quoted are for one year only. For those studying courses that are longer than one year, tuition fees will also be payable in subsequent years of your programme.

The programme is designed for those who intend to pursue a range of policy-related careers within local, regional, or global policymaking institutions. It will equip you to work across a number of policy domains. The course aims to equip you with the policy analysis skills necessary to examine and evaluate policy outcomes alongside a broader range of social research methods required to research substantive policy issues.
