You'll study part time and can choose to complete the MA over 2 years or flexibly between 3-6 years.
Please note - to apply for a UK Government postgraduate loan you'll need to apply for the 2-year fixed programme to meet the loan eligibility requirements.

As a distance learning student, you'll either take one or two modules in the autumn term in your first year.

As a distance learner, you'll access all your learning materials through the University's Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
All resources are uploaded in advance so you can complete activities and take part in discussions at a time that suits you.
You'll be able to consult academic staff at the Shakespeare Institute via Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
Many of the Shakespeare Institute Library's resources are available electronically, as well as e-resources through the University's Main Library.
The programme comprises 120 credits of taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation.

The Teaching Shakespeare module for students on the MA Shakespeare and Education pathway includes a compulsory three-day residential. This takes place at Easter, usually before Good Friday.
The indicative optional module Shakespeare and Theatre Practice is only taught on-site and is open to Distance Learners who can attend the weekly on-site seminars.
To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.

If you don't have the required academic background, you can study our Fall in with Shakespeare or Spring into Shakespeare short course before applying for the MA. Completing one of the short courses can be used instead of a 2:1 Honours degree as entry onto the MA Shakespeare or MA Shakespeare with Education pathway.
As part of your application, you’ll need to provide an essay of approx. 2,000 words on Shakespeare or a similar topic related to Early Modern drama. If you don’t have an essay about Shakespeare to submit, we can accept an essay on another literary topic if necessary. Please contact the programme lead, Dr Abigail Rokison-Woodall, if you have any queries about the writing sample.
If you are an international student, you will need to demonstrate you have a suitable level of English proficiency, usually through the form of an IELTS or equivalent qualification or a Presessional English course.

If you have a conditional offer for Birmingham where English is a requirement, you can take a Presessional English course as an alternative to retaking IELTS or a similar qualification. We offer on-campus courses all year round starting from September including additional online courses in the summer term. Teaching takes place in small classes with no more than 18 students to maximise class participation.
The University tuition fee covers the cost of your tuition, supervision, assessment and includes membership to the Guild of Students.

If you'd like to graduate with an MA in Shakespeare and Education, you'll apply for MA Shakespeare but you'll need to take the module ‘Teaching Shakespeare’ and undertake an Education-focussed dissertation.
