Explore the versatile world of Neuropsychiatry. Our programme covers all the main aspects of neuropsychiatry, from bench to bedside, and provides you with the unique range of skills needed to succeed in the rapidly growing field.
Our MSc is for professionals treating neuropsychiatric disorders, including doctors, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and clinical psychologists. It's also open to psychology and neuroscience graduates seeking to enhance their academic and clinical skills.
The course, so far, has been very useful for my clinical knowledge and helped my clinical practice. It has broadened my understanding of the neuropsychiatric aspects of psychiatric presentations.
Course Structure
This course will run over 12 months in a full-time-mode. There is also scope to undertake the programme on a part-time basis. While the exact content may change, here’s what you can expect to study each term on a full-time Masters course.

Our two introductory modules allow you to familiarise yourself with the basics of neuropsychiatry from a clinical and an academic perspective.
You’ll also be learning from a well-established course, giving you an edge in the job market and PhD study.
Course delivery
This programme is available both full- and part-time and mainly consists of lectures. You’ll learn from subject specialists, NHS clinicians, service users and carers at a top 100 UK university. From the outset we’ll encourage you to become an independent and self-motivated learner.
This course consists of seven taught modules and a dissertation.
- Taught modules – these include lectures from visiting experts who practice and/or research in their specific field.
- Assessments – these include short answer exams, 1500-3000 word essays, case histories, analysing research papers and a dissertation.
- Dissertation – this will be on a neuropsychiatric topic chosen by you. Working on your own, you’ll also have access to a personal tutor to support you.
Module information
The programme comprises 120 credits of taught material. There is also a 60 credit research project.

Entry requirements
To gain a place at Birmingham you will need to meet our general entry requirements, as well as those specific to your course. Your application will be reviewed by the course’s Admissions Tutor, who will decide whether your application should receive an offer.
- 2:1 Honours degree
You should have a 2:1 Honours degree in Medicine, Psychology, Neuroscience or a related subject.
The University accepts Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
Consideration will be given to appropriate professional qualifications at sub-degree level with at least five years experience of working with a client group.
For international students there is an English language requirement of IELTS of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any band.
If you are made an offer of a place to study and you do not already meet the language requirement, you have the option to enrol on our English for Academic Purposes Presessional Course. If you successfully complete this, you will be able to fulfil the language requirement without needing to take a further qualification.
