Meet Kizzie
BA in Anthropology and Politics
How did you choose your degree subject?
I had never heard of Anthropology before researching Undergraduate degrees. I had always planned to study Sociology, with a Joint Honours in Politics, but as I was looking at what other Joint Honours were available, I stumbled across Anthropology and something immediately just clicked.
Best module?
When I was attending open days at UoB, I heard a current student talk about the Kinship, Gender and Sexuality module. I knew then and there that I would love it, particularly as a young, queer woman myself. In my second year, I finally got to to take that module and it felt like a full circle moment. Despite having researched and chosen Anthropology, I finished my first year still surprised at the sheer range of topics you cover, so every lecture felt like something new and exciting.
What's the most underrated spot in Birmingham?
I think there is a lot of pressure when moving to a big city like Birmingham that you have to explore every inch and really embrace a big city lifestyle. While I love Birmingham and visiting all the different areas like Digbeth and Harbourne, I have really cherished the student community that has been created in Selly Oak, from the Indie Lounge to the Grounded Cafe.
What's one piece of advice you can share for incoming students?
My main piece of advice is take your time. You may look around and see everyone making huge groups of close friends, or going out and having all these different experiences, or immediately getting 1sts on their essays. It takes time to adjust to new surroundings, to new writing styles, to new groups of people- you aren't doing anything 'wrong', or falling behind- things will happen at their own pace. Don't stress, and realistically, everyone around you is just as nervous. Give it time, and make the most of it!
