    Meet James

Hi! My name is James, and I am a current undergraduate student on the LLB for Graduates course.

Embarking on the journey to pursue a law degree is a significant decision, one that requires careful consideration. After months of deliberation, the choice became clear and there was no hesitation once I received my offer of acceptance.

While applying for a place at UoB, I found the admission process very straightforward. I found the information webinars particularly helpful as they provided me with great insight into life at UoB. The outreach session was also immensely helpful in clarifying any doubts about the admission process.

The decision-making process was greatly facilitated by the opportunity to meet with representatives of the university back home in Canada.

Being able to sit-down so early on in the application process with Paul McConnell allowed me to gain insights into the programme’s structure, opportunities and the support systems available to international students like myself. It assured me that I would be joining a community that prides itself on academic excellence while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

A pivotal factor is my decision was the university’s prestigious membership in the Russell Group. As someone aspiring to pursue a legal career back in Canada, the importance of earning a degree from an internationally acclaimed institution cannot be overstated. The university’s standing on the global stage open doors to diverse opportunities and ensures that my qualifications are valued in other countries.

Working alongside professors with experience as solicitors provides a greater degree of education that many other law schools in the UK do not. It offers a hands-on approach to learning where students are able to collaborate with peers, engage with clients, and make a positive impact through legal advocacy and representation.

The pro bono group provides students with the unique opportunity to develop their legal skills in a practical setting while also giving back to the community in Birmingham.

The diversity at the university really made it stand out. Meeting people from different cultures and nationalities is something that I have enjoyed very much at university, and in Birmingham which is incredibly diverse.

Beyond the university, the city itself has much to offer. Walking around campus is always a refreshing feeling no matter the season, with its mature red-brick buildings and green spaces.

The surrounding areas are student-friendly, with a dynamic blend of culture, history, and modern amenities. Everything you could possibly need from restaurants to home furnishing can be found in the city centre which is a quick train ride away from campus.

Halfway through my first year of study now, I’m very confident that my decision to study at UoB was the right one. The support that I have received from the LLB scholarship program has made the transition that much easier. The scholarship has afforded me access to a variety of resources and pushed me to pursue more extra-curricular endeavours than I otherwise would have.

As I look to the future, I’m grateful for the opportunities afforded to me through the scholarship and I look forward to completing the rest of my degree knowing that I’m in the right place.
