  • student Hope stands in front of a bookshelf with a book in her hands

Hi, my name is Hope. I am an international student from Kenya.

I'm a second year studying English Literature, but always struggle to give a favourite book when asked the question! I enjoy listening to music, watching films and travelling.

How did you choose your degree subject?

I chose to study English Literature because I love reading and analysing. I was quite good at English Lit in school and enjoyed it, so I decided to continue with it at university. No other subject fit as well as English Literature did in terms of interest/passion.

Best module?

Children's Literature - it was shocking to learn that I could study childhood books in university. Each lecture and seminar was enjoyable and the reading list was always the easiest to get through because of the complexity of the writing and how enjoyable to stories were. It was interesting to explore children's literature from an analytical, adult and literary perspective and from a child's perspective and compare the two.

What's the most underrated spot in Birmingham?

Digbeth (not sure if it's really 'underrated' but it's my favourite area in Birmingham!)

What's one piece of advice you can share for incoming students?

Make the most of your first year. Explore the city and talk to many people. Try out different writing styles in your essays and study topics you might not usually go for immediately. There's no need to play it safe in your first year. Make the most of the newness.
