Dr Andrew Soundy undertook his PhD at the University of Exeter considering how physical activity can benefit individuals with severe mental illness with a particular interest in Schizophrenia. During this time, he developed a unique placement for students supporting individuals with severe mental illness and individuals with chronic and neurological conditions.
He obtained his Lectureship at the University of Birmingham in the Physiotherapy department 2005. Since then he developed his research for people with severe mental illness considering the psychological and social benefits of physical activity and exercise. In July 2022 he was invited to support the World Health Organisation peer review group for developing a package of rehabilitation interventions for people with schizophrenia.
As part of Dr Soundy’s post-doctoral research he developed the model of emotions, adaptation and hope (MEAH). He now uses this as a basis to teach brief psychological interventions to health care students and health care professionals. He is now expanding this work more globally in order to train health care professionals outside England.
Finally, Dr Soundy has a strong interest in research methodology and in particular qualitative methodologies and has recently (2021 onwards) authored chapters on developing a social constructivist approach to meta-ethnography (a qualitative review type) and grounded theory.
