Karthikeyan Muthumayandi is an Assistant Professor in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at the University of Birmingham, Dubai. He is also the Programme Director for the MSc Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, where he leads a range of modules within the postgraduate portfolio.

In his role as Programme Director, Karthikeyan is responsible for overseeing the development and delivery of the MSc Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy program, ensuring it aligns with the latest clinical and academic standards. This role allows him to shape the curriculum, coordinate resources, and support students in achieving their professional and academic goals.

Karthikeyan is a registered physiotherapist with extensive experience in musculoskeletal and sports injury rehabilitation. Throughout his career, he has worked globally in clinical practice, healthcare leadership, research, and academia for the past 26 years. His diverse background includes significant contributions to both the clinical field, as a Senior Physiotherapist at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, and the academic field, through his research and teaching roles in the UK and UAE.

Karthikeyan is passionate about advancing physiotherapy practice and is committed to providing healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in their careers and influence the future of healthcare service delivery.

Biography

Karthikeyan Muthumayandi is a highly skilled physiotherapist with extensive experience in clinical practice and academia. He is currently an Assistant Professor and the Programme Director for the MSc Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at the University of Birmingham, Dubai. In this role, he is responsible for developing and delivering the programme, ensuring it meets the highest standards and prepares graduates for advanced clinical roles and leadership.

Before joining the University of Birmingham, Karthikeyan was a Lecturer and Programme Director in Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation at the University of Kent, where he specialised in sports injuries, manual therapy, rehabilitation, and biomechanics. His teaching and leadership have significantly shaped curricula to enhance student learning and professional skills.

Karthikeyan holds an M.Phil. from Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, and a Master's in Physiotherapy from Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi, where he was awarded a gold medal by Dr. Manmohan Singh, the then Prime Minister of India, for his outstanding academic performance. With over a decade of research experience, Karthikeyan has made notable contributions to orthopaedic and musculoskeletal research, including studies on knee replacements and patient outcomes. He has secured research funding from esteemed organisations like the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and Sarcoma UK, with his work published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences.

In addition to his academic achievements, Karthikeyan has extensive clinical experience as a Senior Physiotherapist and Head of the Advanced Sports Injury and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Centre at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi. He has also played a key role in curriculum development, serving on curriculum review boards in the UK and India. Karthikeyan is a member of the Health and Care Professions Council and the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in the UK, as well as an associate member of the Spinal Cord Society in India. His dedication to advancing physiotherapy through evidence-based practice, innovative teaching, and impactful research has earned him recognition and several awards. His career is characterised by a commitment to excellence, innovation, and improving education and patient care.
