Teresa is an Associate Professor and Lead Midwife for Education. Teresa leads on the development, delivery and management of midwifery education within the School of Nursing and Midwifery.

Teresa is a registered midwife and has previously held a number of academic leadership portfolio roles to include workforce development and transformation, and learning and teaching. Teresa has extensive experience in curriculum design, development and approval across midwifery and nursing and is currently chief midwifery examiner overseeing the development of the NMC test of competence for overseas and return to practice midwives.

Teresa’s scholarly interests include investigating pedagogic approaches which lead to learner self-regulation and the role of assessment in preparing students for clinical practice. Teresa’s professional interests include the development and deployment of the unregistered workforce in maternity care and developing new pathways to midwifery registration.

Biography

Teresa worked clinically as a midwife in Kent and Herefordshire before moving to a lecturing post at the University of Worcester in 2008. In 2013, Teresa moved to the University of the West of England as Associate Head of Department and Lead Midwife for Education.   

Teresa has held a number of external roles which have enabled her to enhance her academic leadership and teaching.  This includes being a member of the HealthTalk.Org Advisory Committee (pre-eclampsia group); the Royal College of Midwives advisory forum; and the NHS England Taskforce for developing professional midwifery advocates. Teresa was project lead for the development of Health Education England’s national maternity support worker competency, career and education framework and remains an active member of the national HEE Maternity Support Worker Oversight Group. Teresa has contributed to the development of new routes into the midwifery workforce. This includes being a member of the trailblazer group for the midwifery apprenticeship and the stakeholder group developing the midwifery T level.

Teresa moved to the University of Birmingham in 2021 to take up the role of lead Midwife for Education and will be leading the development of midwifery education provision here.
