Dr Renaldi Renaldi is an Associate Professor in Emerging Cooling Technologies.

Renaldi is a mechanical engineer by training and completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh. He continued his research as a postdoctoral researcher at Newcastle University and the University of Oxford. Before joining the University of Birmingham, he was a lecturer at Cranfield University.

He has over 15 years of research experience in thermal energy (heating and cooling), solar energy, energy efficiency, and energy systems integration.

His current research is focused on the decarbonisation of cooling technologies towards achieving a sustainable cooling future.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Energy Systems, University of Edinburgh, UK, 2018
  • MSc in Sustainable Energy Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, NL, 2009

Biography

Dr Renaldi Renaldi has a background in mechanical engineering, thermal energy, and energy systems research. He received his PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 2018. His PhD research focused on the modelling and optimisation of energy systems with thermal energy storage. He was a recipient of the John Moyes Lessells Travel Scholarships from the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

After his PhD, he took up his first postdoctoral post at the Sir Joseph Swan Centre for Energy Research, Newcastle University. At Newcastle, Renaldi was working in the EPSRC Centre for Energy Systems Integration project. He then joined the University of Oxford as a Research Associate in Sustainable Cooling in the Oxford Martin School Programme on the Future of Cooling. He was investigating the role of active cooling technologies in achieving sustainable cooling.

Before joining the University of Birmingham in 2024, Renaldi was a Lecturer in Thermal Engineering at Cranfield University. At Cranfield, he led MSc modules on industrial thermal operations and district heating and supervised MSc research projects. He was the lead investigator in Innovate UK-funded Energy Catalyst project, Sustainable Cooling Hub for Small-scale Fisheries in Indonesia, investigating affordable, renewable-based cooling solutions in cold-chain and space cooling applications.
