Paul has extensive experience in the field of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy having qualified as a physiotherapist in 2005 from the University of the West of England. Paul completed his band 5 rotations within Surrey Primary Care Trust and quickly established himself as a Senior Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist. During this role Paul undertook his MSc in Advanced Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy at King’s College London and was awarded the MACP student award in 2013. He subsequently published his MSc thesis in the Physiotherapy Journal. On completion of his MSc, Paul worked in Senior roles within the NHS, most recently as an upper limb Advanced practitioner at Ashford & St. Peter’s Hospitals NHS Trust. During this role Paul was able to influence upper limb care pathways and subsequently published research on the conservative management of rotator cuff tears. Since leaving this role Paul has pursued an academic role as an Assistant Professor of Physiotherapy at Coventry University.

In 2020 Paul completed his PgCert in Academic Practice in Higher Education. Within his role at Coventry University Paul was the Course director for the MSc MSK Physiotherapy and produced one of the first nationally recognised First Contact Practitioner courses. This course was recognised and funded by Health Education England and successfully won back-to-back tender bids for funding of students pursuing these roles. Paul left his role at Coventry University in October 2023 and took up a new position at the University of Birmingham as an Assistant Professor of Physiotherapy. Paul’s current role includes teaching and assessing across Musculoskeletal education on both the undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Paul has recently taken on the programme lead role for the MSc Advanced Manipulative Physiotherapy and MSc Manipulative Physiotherapy courses.

Previous research interest during clinical practice focused on Shoulder rehabilitation and Assessment and a specialist interest in rotator cuff related shoulder pain.
