The team

Our research team consists of immunologists, exercise physiologists and clinicians. The central site for the study is the University of Birmingham, but the University of Exeter and Liverpool John Moors University are also sites for research participants. We work closely with the below type-1 diabetes organisations:

ADDRESS-2 – Supporting Type-1 Diabetes Research

Chief Investigator

Dr Alex Wadley

Dr Alex Wadley

Lecturer in Exercise Metabolism
Academic Director, Cellular Health and Metabolism Facility

School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences

Alex’s work centres on understanding how exercise can prime the immune system to improve patient responses to treatment and reduce disease activity. Alex has worked with patients with type-1 diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, chronic kidney disease and obesity to examine the anti-inflammatory effects of exercise in these populations.

Megan is a PhD student in the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham. She completed her MSc Biomedical Sciences degree at Newcastle University and has a passion for immunology research, with particular focus towards autoimmune disease. As a keen runner, yoga enthusiast and gym-goer, Megan is combining her interests and currently investigating how exercise can reduce autoimmune disease progression and improve patient response to treatment.

Professor of Diabetes Medicine
Honorary Consultant Physician

Department of Immunology and Immunotherapy

Parth is a qualified clinician by background. Parth's research interest focusses on understanding the autoimmune destruction of insulin secreting beta cells that lead to type 1 diabetes and exploring how this process can be modulated.

Recent clinical trials demonstrate that type 1 diabetes can be significantly delayed with a short course of immunotherapy and have ...
