Seb is funded by the Centre for Doctoral Training in Topological Design (CDTTD) and works in the Mathematical Biology group in the School of Mathematics with Dr Fabian Spill and secondary supervisor Prof. Iain Styles from the School of Computer Science. He is part of several projects investigating the applications of topology in biomedical image processing and analysis including classification of microvasculature efficiency, response of mitochondrial networks to hypoxia/ischemia, inferring chemotherapy effectiveness from cell shape and an industrial placement with AstraZeneca.

Qualifications

  • MSc in Topological Design, University of Birmingham
  • MSc in Applied Mathematics, University of Birmingham
  • BSc in Mathematics, University of Manchester

Biography

Seb graduated from the University of Manchester with a BSc in Mathematics. During his undergraduate he carried out a summer research experience placement funded by the Medical Research Council into the placental structure and function in fetal growth restriction through image-based modelling. His final-year dissertation continued this work and was titled 'The Mathematical Modelling of Placental Blood Flow'. Following this, he studied at the University of Birmingham for his MSc in Applied Mathematics. Here his Master's thesis included a collaboration with two institutes at University of Birmingham and another at Queen Mary, University of London applying image analysis techniques to monitor the adhesion of white blood cells in atherosclerosis. Seb became a student in the CDTTD where he completed an MSc in Topological Design with his projects working upon Persistent Homology in image analysis supervised by Dr Jeremy Pike and Prof. Iain Styles and self-assembly microvasculatures in a collaboration with Prof. Emad Moeendarbary's lab at UCL.
