Joy Division, The Cure, UB40, The Human League, Sister Bliss, Joan Armatrading, Simon Le Bon and Mistress Mo are just a few of the bands and alumni that are part of the University of Birmingham’s long, but untold, association with the music industry.
Part of the ‘university music touring circuit’ bands would appear in the Guild of Students, High Hall and Deb Hall in front of enthusiastic students and staff. Organised and promoted by the student events committee, these gigs would be the springboard for careers in the music business.
Now, for the first time, we are revealing and celebrating the University’s role in local, national, and international music culture.
Student researchers from the College of Arts and Law are ripping open the pages of the student Redbrick newspapers of the 60s/70s and beyond, exploring the gig culture on campus, and curating a public exhibition featuring unearthed posters, photography, and archive material in partnership with Birmingham Music Archive.
