The Department of African Studies and Anthropology (DASA) has an established, international reputation as a centre of excellence in the study of Africa and its diasporas.
DASA offers a range of postgraduate study opportunities. From taught Masters programmes in Africa, Development and Social Research, to Masters- and doctoral-level research degrees. We also have our MRes African Studies, which combines three taught modules, with a 20,000 thesis.
We enjoy a friendly, well integrated postgraduate community with students from the UK, Africa and all parts of the world. Staff and students work together closely and take part in an active calendar of events. DASA hosts a seminar series, where staff, postgraduate students and visiting scholars present papers and discuss their work-in-progress. In addition, postgraduate students contribute to regular conferences and accompanying publications organised by the Department.

I have learnt a great deal from my modules on research methods, while the weekly seminars offered a suitable platform to meet scholars working on a variety of topics with different research approaches, which have shaped my own approach to research. Life in Birmingham has been full of productive interactions with great minds.”
