Charlene is an interdisciplinary researcher with a PhD in Human Geography from the University of Birmingham, an MA in Applied Linguistics and Communication from Birkbeck College, University of London and a BA in Sociology from Birmingham City University. Currently, she is a CENTRE-UB Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, focusing on behavioural research.
Her PhD research asked how Caribbean restaurants and takeaways advertise to the superdiverse Ladywood constituency using the linguistic method of Multimodal Discourse Analysis. Her current research on the fellowship is now following on from her PhD research looking at the behaviours behind advertising to a superdiverse community.
Alongside her current research the fellowship is also in partnership with the Royal Geographical Society and Geographical Association. This means she will work with both organisations to create two teacher toolkits, a teacher CPD session and a podcast episode. She is also working with the charity Kidney Care in relation to their African and Caribbean magazine and magazine launch.
Charlene’s research interests lie in the fields of food, marketing, migration, superdiversity, Caribbean diaspora and health.
