Biography

Professor Aziza Mahomed graduated in 2005 with a 1st Class MEng Mechanical Engineering with an Industrial placement, from Durham University.

In 2009 she graduated with a PhD in biomaterials (Mechanical Engineering) from the University of Birmingham. Her doctoral thesis research was entitled “Properties of elastomers for small-joint replacements”. This was followed by a Research Fellow (2009-2012) post and she became a Chartered Engineer during this post. In February 2012, she joined DePuySynthes (Johnson & Johnson) in Cork (Ireland) as a Marie Curie Experienced Research Fellow on a 24-month secondment. Following this post, she was based at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, working on an ERDF project.

In April 2015 she was appointed as a Teaching Fellow, at the School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Birmingham, and then, in August 2017, as a Lecturer. Aziza was appointed as a Senior Lecturer (then Associate Professor) in August 2019. In August 2024, she was appointed to the position of Chair in Engineering Education.

Aziza has developed an educational portfolio, recognised internally (HEFi Education Innovation Award; December 2017) and externally HEA Senior Fellowship in 2020; Advanced HE). She has also been appointed as an external examiner for UK institutions and is an active committee and panel member for the IMechE, including the academic standards committee (accreditation), and she is also an Ethics Ambassador for the Engineering Professors’ Council.

Aziza has secured internal funding (HEFi) and external funding with the Royal Academy of Engineering and collaborated on various Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious awards. Currently, Aziza’s research interest is on Generative Artificial Intelligence.
