Chris Baker has been active in radar research for over thirty-five years, has published widely and has won numerous awards. He led the government research teams responsible for the development of the Sentinel and MSTAR systems in service with the UK Army and Air Force. Chris is working with colleagues at the UK National Quantum Technology Hub for Sensors and Metrology to lead an investigation into quantum radar.

He is co-author of several books including the best-selling “Stimson’s introduction to airborne radar”, a foundational teaching text. He is an enthusiastic communicator on the theme of testing and gives frequent talks to various groups at both the local and national level.

He has received major grants from awarding bodies and industrial companies from all over the world. These grants have supported research, often with a strong applications theme. Chris also provides consultancy and has been engaged by the UK and overseas governments to provide reviews and technical advice.

Qualifications

  • Fellow IEEE, 2015
  • Fellow IET, 1990
  • PhD, 1984
  • Dip App Phys, 1980
  • BSc, 1980

Biography

Chris Baker holds the University of Birmingham chair in intelligent sensor systems and is also the Chief Technology Officer of Aveillant Ltd, a Thales company. Prior to this he was the Ohio State Research Scholar in Integrated Sensor Systems at The Ohio State University.

Until June 2011 he was the Dean and Director of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the Australian National University (ANU). Before this he held the Thales-Royal Academy of Engineering Chair of intelligent radar systems based at University College London.

He has been actively engaged in radar systems research since 1984 and is the author of over two hundred and fifty publications. His research interests include, coherent radar techniques, radar signal processing, radar signal interpretation, electronically scanned radar systems, radar imaging, natural and cognitive echo locating systems.

He is the recipient of the IEE Mountbatten premium (twice), the IEE Institute premium and is a Fellow of the IET and the IEEE.

Teaching

Chris is an enthusiastic teacher and travels the world presenting a variety of courses, seminars and tutorials.
He teaches a newly introduced course based on his textbook, “Stimson’s introduction to airborne radar’.

Postgraduate supervision

PhD candidates supervised are:

  • Galen Reich
  • Ellis Humphries

Research

Chris’s current research interests focus on cognitive radar techniques, distributed sensing, bio-inspired sensing as well as staring, imaging, automotive and quantum radar systems.

Chris is working with colleagues at the UK National Quantum Technology Hub for Sensors and Metrology to lead an investigation into quantum radar.

Other activities

Chris is also the current CTO of Aveillant Ltd, a Thales company, where he is responsible for technical strategy and university liaison as well as providing advice and consultancy helping to solve engineering problems.

Chris is a member of the IEEE AES radar systems panel, is on the editorial board of the IET radar, sonar and navigation journal and, until recently, was an editor of Electronics letters and the IEEE AES proceedings.

Chris has served on numerous government committees, is or has been a visiting Professor at Strathclyde University, Cranfield University, Ohio State University, Wright State University, the University of Cape Town and UCL and has acted as an external examiner to a number of leading universities around the world.
