Selim is an Associate Professor of Strategy and International Business in Birmingham Business School. Previously, he worked at University of Bristol Business School and Nottingham University Business School. 

His research interests lie at the intersection of strategic management, international business, and sustainability. He particularly focuses on modern slavery and labour exploitation risks within international business contexts.

Biography

Selim’s work has been published in leading journals, including British Journal of Management, Risk Analysis, and Production and Operations Management. His research is divided into two streams. In the first stream, he focuses on micro-foundations of sustainability. He examines the role of leadership in promoting sustainability initiatives in the workplace. He also investigates employees’ psychological distance to sustainability concepts and its impact on mitigating behaviours. 

In the second stream, he focuses on sustainability management in global supply chains. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, he collaborates with academics and practitioners from different disciplines to address the complexity of sustainability problems in global supply chains. He leads on projects which aim to help organizations and decision makers to better manage their limited resources when they address sustainability challenges. 

Selim frequently collaborates with practitioners and policy makers in their efforts to tackle labour exploitation and modern slavery. He assisted organizations, including Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Public Works Canada, and Bradford City Council, to understand and respond to modern slavery risks in their supply chains. He also works with various stakeholders in agricultural supply chains to improve working conditions, particularly focusing on migrant workers.
